Facebook Most Visited Social Network in Australia for May 2008

'Facebook' leading search term amongst all websites, 4 weeks ending 14/06/2008

Melbourne - 19 June, 2008 - Facebook was the most visited Social Network website by Australian Internet users during May 2008 according to Hitwise, the leading online competitive intelligence service. Facebook accounted for 41.88 percent share of visits in a custom category of 40 leading social networks in May 2008, followed by MySpace with 39.59 percent of visits.

Leading Social Networks also visited by Australian Internet users included Bebo with 7.33 percent share of visits, Orkut with 2.18 percent and Windows Live Spaces with 1.56 percent. The remaining 35 social networking websites in the custom category accounted for 7.46 percent share of Australian visits.



Facebook has attracted explosive growth in the past year by Australian Internet users, increasing 11-fold comparing May 2007 and May 2008. Facebook ranked as the fourth most visited website amongst all websites in May 2008, moving up from 6th position the previous month.

Engagement with Social Networks remains high with Australian Internet users spending an average of 28 minutes and 56 seconds. This is compared to an average session of 11 minutes and 56 seconds amongst all websites during the week ending 31 May 2008. Facebook has more than doubled the average visitor time on its website in the past year from 15 minutes 40 seconds during May 2007 to 34 minutes 26 seconds during May 2008.

"The increased user-engagement on Facebook is due to the proliferation of third-party applications; particularly ones that serve a useful function, such as travel planners or book-sharing programs. Additional features for connecting users, such as 'People You May Know' has also helped increase user traction on Facebook" said Sandra Hanchard, analyst at Hitwise.

Visits to Social Networks vary widely by market. For example, MySpace dominates heavily in the U.S. accounting for 72.73 percent of visits to Social Networks in May 2008.
